Glitching Goodness: Eprom & Eskmo

Two San Francisco based producers causing a stir in the IDM/glitch-hop scene at the moment are, Eprom and Eskmo, who have a new split EP out on Warp Records you can check out here.



Eprom takes his name from a computer system error, and has honed his skills over the last five years with releases on the obscure Addictech label. His sound mixes dubstep with stunning electronica, managing to be both soulful and experimental at the same time, making tracks that work as brain dance and at the rave.

After several years doing production for the love of it, things have are looking up for Eskmo, with releases on both Warp and Planet Mu, the bastions of the modern electronic scene. Glistening synth-lines and sonically mutated bass are the key elements of his production, mixing melancholic prettiness with booming bottom end.

Best of the Week: 10/03/2010

This week we are blessed with some true disco throwback goodness, with a singer famed for her mid-nineties sounding the business on top of a killer rhythm, a new Australian outfit given the treatment from a producer moving into the big league, then into a an edit that is crafted to perfection over slow and low funk, before we finish with some futuristic electronica some Philly’s grime king in a more reflective mode, and another eccentric individual from the north of England.

Great track out on DFA here from Ray Mang, this tune updates a George Clinton funk jam into a new disco anthem featuring a great vocal from Lady Miss Kier/Ray Mang-Bulletproof (feat. Lady Miss Kier)

New Modular signings The Swiss feature the talented Sidwho? This remix from Hamburg’s Tensnake will appeal to fans of Permanent Vacation’s recent output, mixing German engineering with cosmic disco overtones, and the results are very cool/The Swiss-Manthem (Tensnake remix)

This brilliant edit by Canadian Eddie C sits somewhere between disco, early rap, and 80’s boogie, and is crafted so lovingly that it is absolutely dripping in soulful goodness/Eddie C-Hold On

Philadelphia based grime producer Starkey continues to astound with his broad body of work. Whether it be his darker side, or like this cut, his more reflective. This is a producer demanding your attention right now/Starkey-Stars (feat. Anneka)

Another producer making exciting electronica right now is Werk Discs main man Actress, who has quietly been creating some noise since 2004, yet this remix of Girl Trouble favourite Joy Orbison plus some co-productions with Zomby seem to finally be getting this artist the attention he deserves/Joy Orbison-The Shrew Would Have Cushioned the Blow (Actress’ Neu Haus So-Glo Mix)

The year of 2010 is already producing a bumper crop of great music. This week we bring you future beats from a garage and funky perspective, equally innovative grime from a Philadelphia based producer that stands out from the crowd, a veteran pop idol returning with a great track made better by an edit maestro, bass music from both sides of the Atlantic, and a pop song so magical one dose will have you feeling good for hours.

New Warp Records signing Babe Rainbow follows the revisionary path that you’d associate with the label, taking the sounds of dubstep, garage and the Aphex Twin and crafting them into something all his own/Babe Rainbow-Screwby

Banging remix from Starkey of Atlanta based rapper Gorilla Zoe. Underpinned by an amped up 808 beat, and complete with high drama synth stabs, this is the sort of production Timbaland and Dark Child used to make/Gorilla Zoe-Lost (Starkey remix)

The original of this track from the ex-Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker is on the Steve Albini produced Further Complications, but it is all about this typically clever edit from Parisian Pilooski/Jarvis Cocker-Discosong (Pilooski mix)

This is both a great return to a simpler dance floor approach from Booka Shade, and further evidence of the fantastically upfront talent that is Boy 8-Bit. Out now on Get Physical/M.A.N.D.Y. & Booka Shade-Donut (Boy 8-Bit remix)

Another shift in direction from a talented dubstep producer, this time it is TRG, who’s re-jigged sound fuses his deep harmonies with the sound of UK funky. Not unlike recent output from Untold and Ramadanman, this is out on Tempa Records/Cosmin TRG-Since Last Night

Yeasayer’s magnificent Odd Blood looks like a contender for album of the year already, and this track is an anthem of optimism already, but this subtle retouch from Alan Wilkis simply tightens up the beat a little and captures the best bits, and might be an early contender for remix of the year in its own right/Yeasayer-Ambling Alp (Alan Wilkis remix)
