Best of the Week: 17/03/2010

Modern dance music is a varied and constantly mutating beast. Evolving into different branches but still connected by fundamental factors. This week the selection celebrates the fact that these tunes are hard to pigeonhole, and are all the better for it. From the subtle genius of a Scandinavian legend through to the new jack of Chicago via Brighton, we hope you enjoy an eccentric selection inspired by the path of constant change.

Londoner Ali Love is an image conscious new disco don who is best heard when remixed. This typically well arranged gem from the prince is ode to that, building a weird acid line into something epic before unleashing the vocal at the end/Ali Love-Love Harder (Prins Thomas remix)

Another London based producer, Geeneus, has been making some of the more interesting funky in the last year or so after starting out in grime/Geeneus-Yellowtail VIP

Released by Peverlist’s Punch Drunk label, this is a meeting of two very promising Bristol babsed producers, and wouldn’t be out of place on Hyperdub or Ramp/Shortstuff & Hyetal-Ice Cream

LA band Health get the remix treatment here from one of the best new acts of 2009, Azari & III, who turn the track into a bouncy techno jam for the freakier dance floor/Health-We Are Water (Azari & III remix)

Not a new but still as fresh sounding as ever, this amazing piece of garage-rave-jungle was released back in 2002, and is still ahead of its time today/Sticky-Triplets 3

New release from the ever reliable Made to Play imprint, this is a typically versatile mixing tool for any house or techno DJ/Oliver $-You Got It

Fantastic release from the Well Rounded label, this updates the Chicago house sound by adding a rolling funky rhythm and killer production, making this one of the most refreshing new imprints in some time/Ultrasound-Heavy Roll

Buy music here-Picadilly, Bleep, Rush Hour, Conch, Samurai
